TERRA-BOND: BY-PRODUCT / WASTE UTILIZATION
Properties: Using non-hazardous, finely divided industrial wastes and by-products the Terra-Bond™ process can be used to create
J-Gravel, a high quality synthetic aggregate with the following typical properties:
- Geotechnical soundness: bearing strength and abrasion resistance sufficient for many construction applications.
- Durability: freeze-thaw stability and chemical resistance.
- Low thermal conductivity: provides insulating frost protection.
- Reduced density: typically 20 to 30% lighter than natural aggregate, thereby reducing structural loads and costs associated with transportation and placing.
- Environmental soundness: the modified sulphur binder provides effective leachate control designed to meet regional environmental regulatory guidelines.
The resulting J-Gravel is suitable for a range of civil engineering applications (discussed below) where natural aggregates are not suitable or unavailable due to supply shortages.
Applications: Potential J-Gravel applications can be grouped into two main categories including:
- Asphalt Paving Materials: due to its sulphur based composition, J-Gravel exhibits a strong, natural affinity for the hydrocarbon based binders utilized in hot and cold mix asphalt production. This enhanced binder affinity generally results in superior performance in asphalt applications, relative to natural aggregates. In the case of cold mix asphalt applications, J-Gravel has been successfully used to replace 100% of the natural aggregate. In the case of hot mix asphalt mixes, J-Gravel can be used as partial replacement (up to 50%) of the natural aggregate.
- Frost Protection Backfill: due to its low thermal conductivity, J-Gravel possesses insulating ability making it suitable for frost protection applications such as pipe backfill and/or construction sub-bases for installations sensitive to frost heave.
Commercial Experience: The Pildysh Group successfully commercialized this technology in 1998. Commercial experience proved that J-Gravel was quite effective in consuming substantial volumes of industrial by-products and the production of asphalt materials for industrial and rural road construction.
