TERRA-BOND™: WASTE ENCAPSULATION
Properties: The Terra-Bond™ technology can be used to encapsulate hazardous, solid, finely divided waste materials within stable, discrete pellets with the following general properties:
- Durability: freeze-thaw stability and chemical resistance.
- Environmental soundness: the hazardous waste Terra-Bond™ technology utilizes primary, secondary and (if necessary) tertiary encapsulation to provide effective contaminant leachate control relative to regional environmental regulatory guidelines. A substantially different production regime is required for hazardous waste encapsulation, relative to synthetic aggregate production.
- Handling: discrete pellets are readily handled using conventional equipment making them conducive to efficient storage and movement within containment facilities.
Applications: The Terra-Bond™ process is particularly useful to de-classify finely divided, solid, hazardous wastes. The de-classified wastes, in the form of pellets, can then be safely stored in a suitable containment facility.
Suitable Contaminants and Waste Materials: laboratory testing has proven the Terra-Bond™ technology to be highly effective at encapsulating/stabilizing the following materials:
- Arsenic trioxide baghouse dust from the mining industry.
- Tailings and precipitator dusts contaminated with heavy metals.
- Soils contaminated with heavy hydrocarbons.
